Translation of the meaning by Sahih International.
Page 61 of the Quran (Surah Ali 'Imran, Verses 84–91) emphasizes the absolute unity of prophetic messages, the exclusivity of Islam as the accepted path to Allah, the severe consequences of apostasy and dying in disbelief, and the ultimate futility of worldly wealth on the Day of Judgment.
The Sunnah, classical Hadiths, and historical contexts of revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul) elaborate significantly on these core concepts.
"Say, 'We have believed in Allah and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob... We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [submitting] to Him.' And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him..." (Quran 3:84–85)
Verse 84 states that Muslims make no distinction between the validity of any of Allah's true prophets. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly mirrored this imagery in the Sunnah, describing the lineage of prophets as a single cohesive structure.
Sahih al-Bukhari (3443) & Sahih Muslim (2365): Narrated by Abu Hurairah: Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, "Both in this world and in the Hereafter, I am the nearest of all the people to Jesus, the son of Mary. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one."
Verse 85 underscores that any path chosen outside of total submission (Islam) will be completely rejected by Allah. The operational rule of this verse is foundational to Islamic law (Sharia).
Sahih al-Bukhari (2697) & Sahih Muslim (1718): Narrated by 'Aisha: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He who innovates something in this matter of ours (i.e., Islam) that which is not of it, will have it rejected."
"How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true... Except for those who repent after that and correct themselves..." (Quran 3:86, 89)
Classical Hadith literature tracks a very specific incident involving an early companion who apostatized and fled, matching the exact chronological trigger for these verses.
Sunan an-Nasa'i (4068) & Al-Mustadrak al-Hakim: Narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas: A man from the Ansar (the helpers of Medina) embraced Islam, but later apostatized and joined the polytheists in Makkah. After some time, he regretted his decision and sent a message to his people saying, "Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for me: Is there any repentance accepted from me?" In response to this event, the verses "How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief... Except for those who repent after that and correct themselves..." were revealed. The man's family sent the verses to him, and he returned to Medina, re-entered Islam, and remained a devout Muslim. (Graded Sahih/Authentic by Al-Albani and Al-Hakim).
"Indeed, those who reject the message after their belief and then increase in disbelief - never will their repentance be accepted... Indeed, if each of those who disbelieve then die as disbelievers were to offer a ransom of enough gold to fill the whole world, it would never be accepted from them." (Quran 3:90–91)
The Sunnah provides a stark, vivid depiction of the exact scenario described in Verse 91—the absolute worthlessness of an "earth full of gold" when facing eternal accountability.
Sahih al-Bukhari (3334, 6538) & Sahih Muslim (2805): Narrated by Anas bin Malik: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah will say to that person of the Fire who will have the least punishment on the Day of Resurrection, 'If you had everything that is on the earth, would you give it as a ransom to free yourself?' The person will reply, 'Yes.' Then Allah will say, 'While you were still in the loins of Adam, I demanded of you something much easier than that: that you should not associate anything in worship with Me. But you insisted on worshipping others besides Me.'"
Verse 90 warns that those who "increase in disbelief" until the moment of death will find the gates of repentance locked. The Prophet ﷺ clarified the exact timeline boundary for when a person's repentance becomes void.
Sunan at-Tirmidhi (3537) & Sunan Ibn Majah: Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar: The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah accepts the repentance of a servant as long as his soul has not reached his throat (the death rattle / the agony of death)." (Graded Hasan/Good).
