Jami' at-Tirmidhi (often called Sunan at-Tirmidhi) is one of the Kutub al-Sittah (the six major canonical collections of hadith in Sunni Islam). Compiled by the Persian scholar Imam Abu 'Isa Muhammad ibn 'Isa at-Tirmidhi (824–892 CE), it holds a unique position in Islamic scholarship due to its systematic evaluation of narrative authenticity and its emphasis on juristic application.
Key Characteristics
Classification System: Imam at-Tirmidhi was one of the first scholars to formally introduce and popularize a nuanced categorization system for hadith in a single work, labeling transmissions as Sahih (authentic), Hasan (good/sound), or Da'if (weak). He frequently used the composite designation Hasan Sahih.
Comparative Fiqh: Uniquely, after recording a hadith, Imam at-Tirmidhi often lists which major jurists (such as Al-Shafi'i, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Malik, or Sufyan al-Thawri) relied on it or differed from it, serving as an early encyclopedia of comparative Islamic law.
Selection: The collection contains roughly 3,956 hadiths arranged across 50 main sub-books.
Structure and Content
The work covers both legal rulings and broader spiritual teachings:
Jurisprudence (Fiqh): Covers core acts of worship (Ibadat), financial transactions, marriage, legal penalties, and warfare.
Theology and Eschatology: Features significant sections on the traits of the Prophet (Shama'il), the virtues of the Prophet's companions (Manaqib), trials of the end times (Fitan), and descriptions of Paradise and Hell (Sifat al-Jannah wa al-Nar).
Al-Ilal (The Short Critique): The work concludes with a famous appendix (Al-Ilal al-Saghir) detailing at-Tirmidhi's methodology, the conditions for evaluating narrators, and the science of hidden defects in chains of transmission.
