Sunan an-Nasa'i (formally known as Al-Mujtaba min al-Sunan or Al-Sunan al-Sughra) is one of the Kutub al-Sittah (the six canonical collections of hadith in Sunni Islam). Compiled by the Persian scholar Imam Ahmad ibn Shu'ayb an-Nasa'i (829–915 CE), it is regarded by many scholars as having the strictest standards of narrator authentication among the four Sunan works (Abu Dawood, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah).
Key Characteristics
Two Editions (Al-Kubra vs. Al-Sughra): Imam an-Nasa'i originally authored a massive compilation titled Al-Sunan al-Kubra. When asked if all narrations in it were authentic, he admitted they were not, leading him to extract and strictly filter the authentic transmissions into Al-Sunan al-Sughra (The Minor Sunan), which is the canonical version studied today.
Rigorous Hadith Criticism: An-Nasa'i was renowned for his strict criteria in narrator evaluation (Jarh wa Ta'dil). His scrutiny of subtle defects ('ilal) in transmission chains is often placed just below the standards of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
Variant Chain Analysis: Under specific chapter headings, an-Nasa'i frequently lists multiple variants of a single hadith back-to-back to highlight subtle discrepancies in wording or chains among narrators.
Selection: The collection contains approximately 5,270 hadiths organized across 52 main sub-books.
Structure and Themes
Like the other Sunan works, the text is arranged by legal jurisprudence (fiqh):
Detailed Purification and Prayer: Features exceptionally detailed sections on purification (Taharah), including minute rulings on water purity, ablution, and specific prayer forms (such as Qiyam al-Layl and eclipse prayers).
Financial and Civil Rulings: Covers zakat, commercial transactions, marriage, divorce, oaths, and inheritance.
Criminal Law and Governance: Detailed chapters on penal limits (Hudud), fighting against rebels (Qital Ahl al-Baghy), and judicial conduct.
