Sunan Abu Dawood is one of the Kutub al-Sittah (the six canonical collections of hadith in Sunni Islam). Compiled by Imam Abu Dawood Sulayman ibn al-Ash'ath as-Sijistani (817–889 CE), it is widely regarded as one of the primary references for Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh).
Key Characteristics
Focus on Legal Rulings: Unlike broader collections like Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim, which include extensive historical and theological context, Abu Dawood designed his compilation specifically around legal topics.
Selection: Out of roughly 500,000 traditions he examined, Abu Dawood selected about 5,200 to 5,274 hadiths organized across 43 sub-books.
Grading and Commentary: He explicitly noted when a narrative had a significant weakness. Unannotated entries were generally deemed acceptable for legal deduction.

Acts of Worship (Ibadat): Covers purification, prayer, zakat, fasting, and pilgrimage (Hajj).
Transactions and Law (Mu'amalat): Includes rules on commercial sales, marriage, divorce, inheritance, judicial practice, and penal codes (Hudud).
Ethics and Conduct (Adab): Focuses on social etiquette, clothing, food, and general behavioral guidelines.
