Sunan Ibn Majah is the sixth and final work of the Kutub al-Sittah (the primary canonical collections of Sunni hadith). Compiled by the Persian scholar Imam Abu Abdillāh Muhammad ibn Yazid ibn Majah al-Qazwini (824–887 CE), it is widely recognized for its strict organizational clarity and inclusion of traditions not found in the other five main collections.
Key Characteristics
Structural Efficiency: Among the six major collections, Sunan Ibn Majah is often highlighted for its exceptionally clear organization, logical chapter breakdown, and minimal repetition of chains of transmission (isnad).
Zawa'id (Unique Narrations): The collection features over 1,000 unique traditions (known as Zawa'id Ibn Majah) that do not appear in the other five collections (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, and Nasa'i).
Grade Diversity: While it contains many authentic (Sahih) and good (Hasan) reports, it includes a higher proportion of weak (Da'if) and a few rejected (Munkar) narrations compared to its peers, which led some early jurists to debate its inclusion in the canon alongside the other five books.
Selection: It comprises roughly 4,341 hadiths distributed across 37 books and 1,560 chapters.
Structure and Themes
The collection is primarily designed as a handbook for legal rulings and personal conduct:
Legal Rulings (Fiqh): Covers standard juristic topics, starting with purification, prayer, and zakat, and moving into trade, marriage, property, inheritance, and judicial procedures.
Asceticism (Zuhd): Features a dedicated book on piety, detachment from worldly distractions, and spiritual discipline, which is notably detailed compared to similar sections in the other Sunan works.
Etiquette and Medicine: Includes sections on social manners, dream interpretation, dietary guidelines, and prophetic medicine (Al-Tibb al-Nabawi).
