Translation of the meaning by Sahih International.
Page 54 of the standard Madinah Quran transitions from vital tenets of faith and the love of God into the historical and miraculous lineage of the Family of 'Imran (Aal 'Imran), introducing the birth of Maryam (Mary).
The prophetic traditions (Hadith) and statements of the early generations (Salaf) clarify and emphasize the profound legal and spiritual core of these verses.
"Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins...' Say, 'Obey Allah and the Messenger.' But if they turn away - then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers."
This verse is historically referred to by classical scholars (such as Al-Hasan al-Basri) as Ayat al-Mihnah (The Verse of the Trial/Test), because it was revealed when a group of people claimed they loved God, so Allah required proof of that love via adherence to the Sunnah.
The Hadith on Innovation and Following: To elaborate on what it means to "follow me" (fattabi'uni), the Prophet ﷺ strictly warned against deviating from his law. He said: "Whoever commits an act that does not conform with our matter (religion), then it will be rejected of him."
Citation: Sahih al-Bukhari (Book 49, Hadith 14) and Sahih Muslim (Book 30, Hadith 18).
The Hadith on Loving the Prophet: Loving Allah by following the Prophet ﷺ requires prioritizing him over oneself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "None of you will truly believe until I am more beloved to him than his children, his parents, and all of mankind."
Citation: Sahih al-Bukhari (Book 2, Hadith 14).
"Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of 'Imran over the worlds—Offspring, one of another, and Allah is Hearing and Knowing."
The Hadith: While this verse highlights the supreme choosing of certain lineages over the worlds, the Prophet ﷺ identified his own status within this elite choice. He said: "Indeed, Allah chose Kinanah from the descendants of Ismail, and He chose the Quraysh from Kinanah, and He chose the tribe of Bani Hashim from the Quraysh, and He chose me from the Bani Hashim. So I am the best of you in lineage."
Citation: Sahih Muslim (Book 43, Hadith 1).
Connection: Ibn Kathir notes in his Tafsir under this verse that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the crown jewel of the "family of Abraham" mentioned in verse 33, directly linking this chosen genealogical tree to his ultimate advent.
"[Mention] when the wife of 'Imran said, 'My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me...' But when she delivered her, she said, 'My Lord, I have delivered a female'—and Allah was most knowing of what she delivered—'And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled.'"
Hannah (the wife of 'Imran) made a specific supplication at Maryam's birth, asking Allah to protect her and her future lineage from Satan. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that Allah uniquely answered this prayer.
The Hadith: The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no child born except that Satan touches them at the moment of birth, and they begin to cry out loud from the touch of Satan—except for Mary and her son (Jesus)." Abu Hurayrah (the narrator) then added, "Recite if you wish: 'And I seek refuge for her in You and her descendants from Satan, the expelled.'"
Citation: Sahih al-Bukhari (Book 60, Hadith 64) and Sahih Muslim (Book 43, Hadith 195).
"So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, 'O Mary, from where is this to you?' She said, 'It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account.'"
The Tradition of the Companions: In detailing what these "provisions" (rizq) were, Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, and other early authorities explained that Zechariah would find fresh summer fruits in her chamber during the dead of winter, and fresh winter fruits during the heat of summer.
Citation: Recorded by Ibn Abi Hatim and widely corroborated across early classical commentaries (Tafsir al-Tabari and Tafsir Ibn Kathir).
The Hadith Context: A direct, striking parallel to Maryam's miracle happened to the Prophet ﷺ with his daughter, Fatimah. During a period of severe hunger, Fatimah came to the Prophet ﷺ with a small amount of meat and bread. When he uncovered the vessel, it was completely overflowing with food. He looked at her and asked the exact question from verse 37: "O Fatimah, from where is this to you?" She naturally responded with Maryam's identical words: "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account." The Prophet ﷺ then wept and praised Allah, saying: "Praise be to Allah Who has made you resemble the master of the women of the Children of Israel (Maryam)."
Citation: Al-Hafiz Abu Ya'la in his Musnad (as cited by Ibn Kathir in his exegesis of this specific verse, verified as a sound supporting narration of prophetic household blessings).
