Page 49 of the Quran contains the final four verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (Verses 283 through 286). This page marks the conclusion of the longest chapter in the Quran, transitioning from the final legal codes of finance and collateral into a massive, foundational declaration of Islamic creed (Aqeedah), human accountability, and divine mercy.
Because of the extraordinary spiritual weight of these concluding verses, the Hadith and Sunnah literature feature an abundance of narrations detailing their unique cosmic virtues, circumstances of revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul), and regular use in daily prophetic practice.
This verse continues the legal framework from the previous page: "And if you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit [collateral] taken [is sufficient]..."
The Sunnah of Commercial Pledges (Rahn): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ implemented this verse practically in his personal financial affairs, establishing that entering into business contracts or leveraging collateral with non-Muslims is entirely permissible in the Sunnah.
Narrated Aisha: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ bought some foodstuff on credit from a Jew and pledged his iron armor to him as security (collateral)." — Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 34 (Sales), Hadith 2068; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1603.
Before looking at individual verses, the Sunnah highlights the collective, immense spiritual value of the final verses of this page.
Sufficient for Anyone Who Recites Them at Night: The Prophet ﷺ established a regular nightly Sunnah of reciting the end of Surah Al-Baqarah for absolute spiritual and physical protection.
Narrated Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient for him." — Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 64, Hadith 4008; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 808. (Scholars note "sufficient for him" means they suffice as a protection against Satan, or stand in place of the voluntary night prayer).
A Direct Gift from the Night of Ascension (Isra’ wal-Mi’raj): Unlike most of the Quran, which was brought down to Earth by the Angel Jibril (Gabriel), these final verses were given directly to the Prophet ﷺ in the heavens.
Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey... he was given three things: He was given the five obligatory prayers, he was given the concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, and remission of major sins was granted to those of his Ummah who did not associate anything with Allah. — Sahih Muslim, Book 1 (The Book of Faith), Hadith 173.
Light Given Only to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
Narrated Ibn Abbas: While Angel Jibril was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, he heard a creaking sound above him... Jibril said: "This is a gate opened in heaven today which had never been opened before." An angel descended from it and said: "Receive glad tidings of two lights given to you which were never given to any prophet before you: The Opening of the Book (Surah Al-Fatiha) and the concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah. You will not recite a single letter of them but you will be granted it." — Sahih Muslim, Book 6, Hadith 806.
This verse initially caused immense panic among the Companions: "Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it..."
The Reason for Revelation and Divine Mercy: The Sunnah documents how the terrifying weight of verse 284 was immediately mitigated by Allah through the verses that followed it.
Narrated Abu Hurairah: When this verse was revealed, it weighed heavily on the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They came to him, fell to their knees, and said: "O Messenger of Allah! We were tasked with deeds we can handle—prayer, fasting, jihad, charity. But this verse has been revealed to you, and we cannot bear it [accounting for random inner thoughts]." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do you want to say what the People of the Two Books said before you: 'We hear and we disobey'? Rather, say: 'We hear and we obey. We seek Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return.'" When the people accepted this and their tongues humbled themselves to it, Allah immediately revealed the next verse (285) confirming their faith, and subsequently abrogated the severity of verse 284 by revealing verse 286: “Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity...” — Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 125.
This verse outlines the universal Islamic creed: "The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers..."
The Sunnah of Unwavering Belief in Past Prophets: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ solidified the message of verse 285—refusing to discriminate between past messengers—by establishing it as a core prerequisite for entering Paradise.
Narrated Ubadah bin as-Samit: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever testifies that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone... and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and that Jesus is the slave of Allah and His Messenger, and His Word which He bestowed upon Mary... Allah will admit him into Paradise with the deeds he has done." — Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 60, Hadith 3435; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 28.
This verse provides the definitive ease of Islamic law: "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned..."
Allah's Direct Response to Each Line: The Sunnah notes that the long, emotional prayer concluding Surah Al-Baqarah ("Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred...") receives an active, loving confirmation from Allah the Almighty whenever it is spoken.
Narrated Ibn Abbas (in a continuation of the Hadith about the two lights): Whenever the Prophet ﷺ recited any of the requests at the end of verse 286, such as: "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred," Allah answered him directly by saying: "I have done so (I have granted your request)." — Sahih Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 126.
Forgiveness for Mistaken and Forced Actions: The foundational Islamic legal principle established in verse 286—that humans are not held spiritually liable for genuine mistakes, forgetfulness, or forced actions—is explicitly codified by the Prophet ﷺ:
Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah has pardoned for my Ummah (followers) their mistakes, their forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do under coercion." — Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 10, Hadith 2045 (Authenticated as Sahih by Al-Albani).
