Translation of the meaning by Sahih International.
Page 47 of the Quran contains Surah Al-Baqarah, Verses 275 through 281. This page holds an incredibly serious and foundational status in Islamic jurisprudence and history: it contains the definitive, final legislation utterly banning Riba (usury, interest-bearing transactions), contrasts it with the spiritual purification of charity, and concludes with what many companions held to be the absolute final verse of the Quran ever revealed before the passing of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Because these verses permanently reshaped the socioeconomic infrastructure of the Islamic world, the Hadith and Sunnah literature regarding them is vast and strict.
This verse marks a severe warning against those who deal in interest: "Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity..."
The Revelation and Immediate Commercial Ban:
The Sunnah documents how immediately and universally the business laws of the region changed when page 47 was revealed.
Narrated Aisha: When the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah regarding Riba (usury) were revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the people, recited them to them, and then declared the trade of alcohol (Khamr) illegal as well [closing all loops on illicit wealth and intoxication].
— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 65 (Tafsir), Hadith 4540; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1580.
The Miraculous Night Journey (Isra’ wal-Mi’raj) Visual:
The Prophet ﷺ was physically shown the terrifying reality of the people described in verse 275 during his ascension to the heavens, giving an eyewitness Sunnah verification to the text:
Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "On the night of my Ascent (Isra'), I passed by a people whose stomachs were like houses, filled with snakes that could be seen from the outside of their bellies. I asked, 'Who are these people, O Jibril?' He replied: 'These are the consumers of Riba (usury).'"
— Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2273; Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 8642 (Graded Hasan).
Verse 276 states: "Allah destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And Allah does not like every sinning disbeliever."
The Absolute Curse on the Usurious Ecosystem:
The Sunnah leaves no room for gray areas regarding who is responsible when an economy engages in Riba. It is not just the lender who is blamed, but everyone facilitating it.
Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the consumer of interest, the one who pays it, the one who writes the contract for it, and the two witnesses to it, and he said: "They are all equal (in sin)."
— Sahih Muslim, Book 22, Hadith 106.
These verses deliver the ultimate ultimatum to believers: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger..."
The Circumstances of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul):
The Sunnah details that even after transitioning to Islam, certain prominent tribes (like the Banu Amr of Thaqif and Banu Mughirah) still wanted to collect massive back-interest outstanding from pre-Islamic business contracts. Upon the revelation of verse 278, the Prophet ﷺ legally abolished all ancestral, outstanding family interest claims starting with his own household.
From the Farewell Sermon (Khutbat al-Wada’): The Prophet ﷺ stood before the masses during his final pilgrimage and enacted the practical Sunnah of this verse: "All usury (Riba) of the days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) is hereby completely abolished. The first of our usury that I completely abolish is the usury of our own family: the interest due to my uncle, Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib. It is all entirely cancelled."
— Sahih Muslim, Book 15 (The Book of Pilgrimage), Hadith 1218.
This verse establishes a profound ethical banking law: "And if someone is in hardship, then let there be postponement until [a time of] ease. But if you give [it as] charity, then it is better for you, if you only knew."
The Reward for Giving More Time to a Debtor:
The Sunnah transforms this legal directive into a highly sought-after spiritual goal for Muslim merchants.
Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever grants respite to a person in financial difficulty, or waives a portion of the debt for him, Allah will shade him under the Shade of His Throne on the Day of Resurrection, a day when there is no shade but His."
— Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1306 (Authenticated as Sahih).
The page—and the entire massive discourse on financial law—concludes with Verse 281: "And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged."
The Historical Climax of Revelation:
The top Quranic scholars among the companions identified this exact verse on page 47 as the final textual interaction between the heavens and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ before his death.
Narrated Ibn Abbas: "The very last verse of the Quran to be revealed to the Prophet ﷺ was: 'And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah...' (2:281)"*
— Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 65, Under the Commentary of Surah Al-Baqarah; also recorded by Al-Tabari.
The Timing of the Prophet’s Death:
The historical Sunnah recorded by classical commentators (such as Ibn Kathir and Sayyidna Umar) notes that after verse 281 was placed by the Prophet ﷺ into its designated location at the end of the Riba section of Surah Al-Baqarah, he lived for only 9 to 31 nights before passing away, meaning page 47 represents the literal closing curtain of legislative Quranic revelation.
