Translation of the meaning by Sahih International.
Page 204 of the Quran encompasses Surah At-Tawbah (Chapter 9), verses 107 through 111. This page captures one of the most dramatic historical confrontations during the Madinan period: the exposure and subsequent destruction of the "Mosque of Harm" (Masjid al-Dirar), contrasting it with the physical and spiritual purity of the first mosque built on piety. The page concludes with one of the most famous theological declarations in Islamic scripture—the divine contract of paradise.

Primary Hadith texts and classical works of Tafsir link specific prophetic traditions, historical events (Asbab al-Nuzul), and legal rulings directly to these verses.
"And [there are] those [hypocrites] who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Messenger before..." (Quran 9:107)

Right before Prophet Muhammad set out for the Expedition of Tabuk, a faction of hypocrites built a new structure in the outskirts of Medina, claiming it was a mosque intended for the old, weak, and sick on rainy nights. They asked the Prophet to pray in it to give it official religious legitimacy. The Prophet, busy preparing for the march, promised to look into it upon his return.

The Revelation on the Journey Back (Tafsir Ibn Kathir): When the Prophet was returning from Tabuk and stopped at a place called Dhu Awan (about a day's journey from Medina), Angel Jibril descended with verses 107–110, exposing the building's true purpose. It was not a house of worship, but a military and political outpost built under the secret direction of Abu 'Amir al-Rahib (a pagan turned Christian monk who fled to Syria to secure Roman military backing to expel the Muslims).

The Sunnah of its Total Demolition: Upon receiving this revelation, the Prophet immediately took decisive operational action. He sent a small group of companions, including 'Asim ibn 'Adi and Malik ibn al-Dukhshum, giving them a direct executive order recorded in the biographical Sunnah:

"Go to this mosque whose people are unjust, destroy it, and burn it down." (Recorded in Tafsir al-Qurtubi and Asbab al-Nuzul by Al-Wahidi). The companions went, set fire to its palm-leaf roof, and completely leveled the structure, transforming the site into a garbage dumping ground to prevent it from ever being used for subversion again.

"Never stand [for prayer] within it – ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves..." (Quran 9:108)

After forbidding the Prophet from ever stepping foot into the Mosque of Harm, Allah points him back to a legitimate sanctuary: a mosque "founded on righteousness from the first day."

Which Mosque Was It? (Sahih Muslim): Prophetic traditions clarify that while this description perfectly fits Masjid Quba (the first mosque built upon the Prophet's migration), the Prophet also applied the principle to his primary mosque in Medina. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri narrated:
"I entered upon the Messenger of Allah in the house of one of his wives and asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, which of the two mosques was founded on piety?' He took a handful of pebbles and struck them on the ground, then said: 'It is this mosque of yours (in Medina).'" (Sahih Muslim, Book 15, Hadith 571). Classical scholars synthesize this by explaining that both mosques share this elite spiritual foundation.

The Sunnah of Water Purification (Sunan Abi Dawud): The verse heavily praises the congregation of this righteous mosque because they "love to purify themselves." Intrigued by this divine praise, the Prophet investigated their hygiene habits. Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said:

"This verse was revealed concerning the people of Quba: 'Within it are men who love to purify themselves.' They used to cleanse themselves with water [after relieving themselves], so this verse was revealed concerning them." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 44; Sunan At-Tirmidhi, 3100). Contextual Note: While many in Arabia at the time used only dry stones for cleaning, the people of Quba combined stones with water for an absolute, pristine clean—an action so beloved to Allah that He immortalized it in the Quran, embedding it permanently into the Sunnah of personal hygiene.

"Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed..." (Quran 9:111)

This verse frames the relationship between a believer and God as a transactional business covenant (Bay'ah), where the mortal human gives up autonomous self-will, life, and material wealth, and receives an irreversible guarantee of eternal Paradise.

The Historical Backdrop (The Pledge of 'Aqabah): Classical commentators note that while this verse applies universally, its earliest enactment was the Second Pledge of 'Aqabah before the Migration (Hijrah). When the Ansar of Medina met the Prophet in secret to pledge their lives to protect him, Abdullah ibn Rawahah stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, draw whatever conditions you want for your Lord and for yourself." The Prophet replied: "For my Lord, that you worship Him alone... and for myself, that you protect me as you protect your own wealth and lives." They asked: "If we do that, what is our reward?" He replied: "Paradise." They joyfully yelled out: "What a profitable bargain! We will never cancel this deal, nor seek to alter it!" (Recorded in Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Musnad Ahmad).
The Sunnah Application by the Companions: The Prophet’s companions took this contractual language literally. During battles, they would actively remind themselves of this "sold" status. Before entering battle at Yamamah, companions were reported to have yelled out: "O people of Surah At-Tawbah! Rejoice in the bargain you have struck!" using the exact language of verse 111 to fortify their courage against fear of death.
