Translation of the meaning by Sahih International.
In the standard Medina / King Fahd complex layout of the Qur’an, Page 7 encompasses Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2), Verses 38 through 48.
This page concludes the story of Adam’s descent to Earth (Verses 38–39) and immediately transitions into a major theological pivot: the beginning of the Qur'an’s lengthy, detailed address to the Children of Israel (Bani Isra'il) (Verses 40–48). This section commands them to fulfill their covenant, validate the final revelation, establish prayer, pay charity, practice self-accountability, and remember the Day of Judgment.
The Sunnah and canonical Hadith literature provide essential context, prophetic definitions, and deep spiritual insights into these verses.
"We said, 'Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.'" (Qur'an 2:38-39)
The Prophet ﷺ explicitly mapped out what happens to a person who successfully follows the divine guidance mentioned in Verse 38, ensuring their safety from cosmic terror.
The Hadith: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Allah will say [on the Day of Judgment], 'Bring out from the Fire whoever remembered Me even for one day, or feared Me in any situation.'" (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2594; classified as Hasan).
The Finality of the Inmates: Verse 39 warns that deniers will "abide therein eternally" (Khaliduna fiha). The Sunnah describes the exact moment this structural finality is physically manifested:
"Death will be brought forward in the shape of a black-and-white ram... It will be slaughtered between Paradise and Hell. Then it will be said, 'O people of Paradise, eternity and no death! O people of the Fire, eternity and no death!'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 4730; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2849).
"O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and fulfill My covenant that I will fulfill your covenant [with you], and of Me, be afraid." (Qur'an 2:40)
The foundational warning given to Bani Isra'il here is the danger of receiving divine favors but failing the structural covenant. The Prophet ﷺ strongly warned the Muslim community against sliding into this exact pitfall.
The Hadith: The Prophet ﷺ stated:
"There is no faith for the one who cannot be trusted, and there is no religion for the one who does not keep his covenant." (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 12383; classified as Sahih by Al-Arna'ut).
"...And do not exchange My verses for a small price, and fear only Me." (Qur'an 2:41)
This verse directly reprimands the religious leadership of Medina who distorted or hid scriptural truths (such as descriptions of the final Prophet) to preserve their social status and financial tithes. The Sunnah features strict warnings against weaponizing sacred knowledge for material leverage.
The Hadith: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned:
"Whoever seeks knowledge that should be sought for the sake of Allah, but he only learns it to gain some worldly benefit, he will not smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 3664; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 252. Classified as Sahih).
"And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it]." (Qur'an 2:42)
Concealing structural text (Khitman al-Ilm) out of political or social convenience is heavily criminalized in the Prophetic traditions.
The Hadith: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Whoever is asked about knowledge that he knows, but he conceals it, he will be bridled on the Day of Resurrection with a bridle of fire." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2649; Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 3658. Classified as Sahih).
"Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?" (Qur'an 2:44)
This verse targets intellectual hypocrisy—preaching high ethics while covertly living an unrighteous life. The Sunnah provides an incredibly stark, unforgettable visual of the metaphysical reality of this dynamic.
The Hadith: The Prophet ﷺ said:
"A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and cast into the Hellfire, so that his intestines will spill out into the Fire... The inmates of Hell will gather around him and say, 'O so-and-so, what is wrong with you? Did you not used to command us to do good and forbid us from doing evil?' He will reply, 'Yes, I used to command you to do good, but I did not do it myself; and I used to forbid you from doing evil, while I myself committed it.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3267; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2989).
"And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]" (Qur'an 2:45)
Whenever crisis, anxiety, or structural difficulty struck the early Muslim community, the Prophet ﷺ immediately operationalized this exact verse.
The Sunnah Practice: Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman narrated:
"Whenever a matter distressed or worried the Prophet ﷺ, he would immediately turn to prayer (Salah)." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 1319; Classified as Sahih).
"And fear a Day when no soul will suffice for another soul at all, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they be helped." (Qur'an 2:48)
Verse 48 establishes that on Judgment Day, no unauthorized, corrupt, or tribal favoritism can save a person—a direct rebuttal to the false belief among some that their lineage alone would shield them. However, the Sunnah provides the critical nuance of who is granted permission by Allah to receive intercession (Shafa'ah).
The Hadith: The Prophet ﷺ explained that real, valid intercession belongs strictly to those of pure Monotheism (Tawhid):
I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Who will be the luckiest person to gain your intercession on the Day of Resurrection?" He replied: "The luckiest person to gain my intercession will be the one who says 'La ilaha illallah' (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah) sincerely from the bottom of his heart." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 99).
