Surah Al-Fatihah is the first chapter of the Quran. Its name literally means "The Opening" or "The Key," as it serves as the preface to the entire holy book. It consists of seven verses and is considered the cornerstone of the Quran, summarizing the relationship between Allah and His creation, His authority, and humanity's dependence on Him for guidance. It is central to Islamic prayer (Salah), being recited 17 times a day in obligatory prayers.
When and Where it was Revealed:
The most widely accepted view among scholars is that Surah Al-Fatihah was revealed in Mecca. It is considered one of the very earliest revelations to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), with some traditions even stating it was the first complete Surah revealed.
While the majority of scholars agree on its Meccan origin, some views suggest it was revealed in Medina, or even twice (once in Mecca and again in Medina). However, the evidence, particularly from other Meccan Surahs like Al-Hijr (15:87) which refers to "the seven oft-repeated verses" (understood to be Al-Fatihah), strongly supports its revelation in Mecca.

Page 1 of the Quran consists entirely of Surah Al-Fatihah (The Opening). Because this single page serves as the foundational cornerstone of the entire Quran and the absolute core of daily Islamic worship, there is a vast body of Hadiths and Sunnah traditions dedicated to its immense virtues, spiritual secrets, and daily applications.
Here are the most authentic Hadiths and Sunnah practices related to page 1 of the Quran, complete with their primary sources:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explicitly stated that the first page holds a status unmatched by any other chapter in the Quran or any previous divine scripture.
Narrated Abu Sa'id bin Al-Mu'alla: The Prophet ﷺ said to me, "Shall I not teach you the most superior Surah in the Quran before you go out of the mosque?" He then held my hand, and when we were about to leave, I reminded him.
He said, "It is Al-Hamdu lillahir-Rabbil-`Alamin (Surah Al-Fatihah). It is the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses (As-Sab'ul-Mathani) and the Great Quran which has been given to me."

One of the most beautiful Hadiths regarding page 1 explains that reciting Surah Al-Fatihah is actually a verse-by-verse dialogue between the reciter and Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah the Exalted said (in a Hadith Qudsi): "I have divided the prayer (Surah Al-Fatihah) into two halves between Myself and My servant, and My servant shall have what he asks for."
When the servant says: All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds, Allah says: "My servant has praised Me."
When he says: The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Allah says: "My servant has extended praise to Me."
When he says: Sovereign of the Day of Recompense, Allah says: "My servant has glorified Me."
When he says: It is You we worship and You we ask for help, Allah says: "This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for."
When he says: Guide us to the straight path..., Allah says: "This is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for."

By Sunnah, a Muslim must recite this first page a minimum of 17 times a day across the five daily prayers. Skipping it completely invalidates the prayer.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever does not recite the Opening of the Book (Al-Fatihah) in his prayer, his prayer is invalid."

A unique Hadith highlights the dramatic spiritual weight of this page, noting that its revelation caused a shift in the heavens and brought down an angel through a gate that had never been opened before.
Narrated Ibn Abbas: While the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) was sitting with the Prophet ﷺ, he heard a creaking sound above him. He lifted his head and said: "This is a gate opened in heaven today which had never been opened before." Then an angel descended through it and said:
"Rejoice in two lights bestowed upon you which have not been given to any prophet before you: the Opening of the Book (Surah Al-Fatihah) and the concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah. You will never recite a letter from them without being granted that request."

It is an established Sunnah that upon completing the final verse of the first page ("...nor of those who are astray"), the reciter and the entire congregation behind the Imam should say "Ameen" (Amen) out loud.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "When the Imam says 'Ameen', then say 'Ameen', for indeed, whoever's 'Ameen' coincides with the 'Ameen' of the angels, his previous sins will be forgiven."

The first page is also known as As-Shifa (The Cure). The Prophet's companions established a Sunnah of using page 1 as a spiritual antidote for physical illnesses and poisons.
A group of companions traveled and stopped near an Arab tribe whose leader had been stung by a scorpion. A companion stepped forward and recited Surah Al-Fatihah over the leader, blowing his breath on him, and the leader was instantly cured.
When they later informed the Prophet ﷺ, he smiled and asked: "How did you know that it (Surah Al-Fatihah) is a Ruqyah (a spiritual cure)?" > * Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 37, Hadith 2276
