Translation of the meaning by Sahih International.
Page 152 of the Quran covers Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights), verses 12 through 22. This specific passage details the cosmic confrontation between Allah and Iblis (Satan), the origin of satanic pride, Iblis's ultimate vow to misguide humanity, and the subsequent deception of Prophet Adam and Eve (Hawwa) in Paradise regarding the forbidden tree.
The authentic Hadith literature and Sunnah deeply contextualize these verses, breaking down the spiritual psychology of arrogance, the mechanics of Shaitan's whisperings, and theological clarification regarding Adam's descent.
"[Allah] said, 'What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?' [Iblis] said, 'I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.'" — Surah Al-A'raf (7:12)
Iblis committed the first sin in cosmic history by evaluating divine commands using faulty analogical reasoning (qiyas) rooted in self-conceit. The Sunnah strongly addresses the internal mechanism of this sin—arrogance (kibr).
To prevent believers from replicating the psychology of Iblis, the Prophet Muhammad explicitly defined what constitutes arrogance in the eyes of God.
Hadith: Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrated that the Prophet said:
"He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of arrogance will not enter Paradise." A man asked, "What if a person likes his clothes and shoes to look good?" The Prophet replied, "Allah is Beautiful and He loves beauty. Arrogance means rejecting the truth (batar al-haqq) and looking down on people (ghamt an-nas)." (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 91) Connecting to Verse 12: Iblis rejected the truth (Allah’s command) and despised another creation (Adam).
The Sunnah emphasizes that pride belongs uniquely to the Creator; when a creation attempts to claim it, they mimic Iblis's downfall (Verse 13: "Get down from it, for it is not for you to be arrogant here").
Hadith: Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said in a Hadith Qudsi (Divine Hadith):
"Allah Almighty says: 'Pride is My cloak and greatness is My robe, and whoever competes with Me in either of them, I will cast him into the Hellfire.'" (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2620; Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 4090)
"[Iblis] said, 'Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path. Then I will come to them from before them and from behind them and from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them grateful.'" — Surah Al-A'raf (7:16-17)
These verses map out Shaitan's geopolitical strategy against the human soul. Prophetic traditions explain how literal and invasive this "sitting in wait" actually is.
The Sunnah clarifies that Shaitan's physical and spiritual proximity to human thoughts is incredibly intimate, allowing him to whisper from within.
Hadith: Safiyyah bint Huyayy reported that the Prophet said:
"Verily, Shaitan circulates through the human being just as blood circulates through the veins." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3281 / Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2175)
Because Iblis vowed to attack from the front, back, right, and left (Verse 17), the Prophet Muhammad established a specific daily Sunnah supplication (du'a) asking Allah for absolute spatial protection from these exact four avenues.
Hadith: Abdullah Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah never failed to utter these expressions in the evening and in the morning:
"O Allah, protect me from my front and from my back, from my right and from my left, and from above me; and I seek refuge in Your Greatness from being swallowed up from beneath me." (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 5074 / Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3871; graded Sahih)
“And O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat from wherever you will but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers.” So Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts..." — Surah Al-A'raf (7:19-20)
The Sunnah provides crucial theological background to this event, ensuring Muslims do not view Adam's mistake as a "fall from grace" that ruined a permanent heavenly stay. Rather, it was a necessary step toward executing his original purpose as a vicegerent (khalifah) on Earth.
Hadith: Abu Hurairah narrated a fascinating debate that took place between Prophet Moses (Musa) and Prophet Adam in the metaphysical realm. Moses said to Adam, "You are the one whose sin expelled humanity from Paradise!" Adam replied to Moses:
"Do you blame me for an action which Allah had written into my destiny forty years before I was created?" The Prophet Muhammad then remarked, "Thus Adam confounded Moses." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6614 / Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2652) Note: This teaches that the experience with the forbidden tree was a divine educational test to prepare humanity for life on Earth, rather than an unmitigated disaster.
In Verses 20–22, Iblis uses false oaths and subtle suggestions to entice Adam and Eve. The Sunnah teaches that when a believer experiences invasive, negative spiritual whisperings, they should immediately cut them off by seeking refuge.
Hadith: Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:
"Shaitan will come to one of you and say, 'Who created this? Who created that?' until he says, 'Who created your Lord?' When he reaches that point, let him seek refuge in Allah (Audhu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajeem) and stop those thoughts." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3276 / Sahih Muslim, Hadith 134)
The Root of Arrogance: Denying the commands of Allah because one feels intellectually or physically superior (like Iblis comparing fire to clay) is the definition of kibr, which bars entry to Paradise.
Active Defense: Because Shaitan attacks from all four physical quadrants, the morning and evening Adhkar (remembrances) are the believer's shield.
Repentance Over Despair: While Iblis responded to his error with pride and blame, the forthcoming verses show Adam responding with humility—a blueprint for human behavior highlighted across the Sunnah.
