Page 572 of the Quran marks the beginning of Surah Al-Jinn (Chapter 72), verses 1 through 13.

This page transitions away from the history of Prophet Nuh into an incredible divine disclosure. It pulls back the cosmic veil to reveal a secret event that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself was initially unaware of: a passing delegation of Jinn (unseen spiritual beings) overhearing his dawn prayer recitation and converting to Islam on the spot.

The canonical Hadith literature—particularly Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim—provides the exact Asbab al-Nuzul (reasons for revelation) and a firsthand historical breakdown of this event.

1. Verses 1–2: The Secret Audition in the Valley of Nakhlah

"Say, [O Muhammad], 'It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, "Indeed, we have heard an amazing Quran. It guides to the right path, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone."'" (Quran 72:1-2)

The Occasion of Revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul)

The Sunnah establishes that this event occurred during the Year of Sorrow, shortly after the Prophet ﷺ suffered a brutal, bloodstained rejection by the people of Ta'if. Returning to Mecca heavy-hearted, he stopped to pray the Fajr (dawn) prayer in a valley called Nakhlah. Unbeknownst to him, a group of Jinn were standing in the shadows, paralyzed in awe by the beauty of the Quran.

The primary authority on this page is Abdullah ibn Abbas (ra), whose detailed account is preserved in the highest tier of Hadith authenticity.

Ibn Abbas (ra) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not purposely recite the Quran to the Jinn, nor did he see them. He was merely traveling with a group of his companions heading toward the market of 'Ukaz.

At that time, something had intervened between the devils and the news of heaven, and shooting stars (shuhub) were being hurled at them. The devils returned to their people, who asked, 'What has happened to you?' They replied, 'Something has blocked us from the news of heaven, and flames have been shot at us!' Their leaders said, 'Nothing has blocked you unless some cosmic event has occurred. Go traverse the earth, East and West, and find out what it is.'

The group that went toward the region of Tihama came across the Prophet ﷺ while he was at Nakhlah on the way to 'Ukaz, leading his companions in the Fajr prayer. When they heard the Quran being recited, they listened intently and said to one another, 'By Allah! This is what has blocked you from the news of heaven!' Then they returned to their people and shouted: 'O our people! Indeed we have heard an amazing Quran!' (72:1). Then Allah revealed these exact verses to His Prophet."

2. Verse 6: The Inter-Species Exploitation

"And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they only increased them in burden/wickedness (Rahaqa)." (Quran 72:6)

Dismantling Pagan Superstitions

Before Islam, when an Arab traveler had to camp inside a dark, dangerous desert valley at night, they would shout out a pagan incantation: "I seek refuge in the master/king of this valley (meaning the chief Jinn) from the foolish spirits of his nation!"

The Sunnah explains that this behavior caused intense spiritual corruption. It made the Jinn arrogant, thinking they were superior to humans, while it trapped humans in paralyzing fear and minor polytheism.

The companion Khawlah bint Hakim (ra) reported that the Prophet ﷺ directly replaced this toxic, fear-based pagan habit with a clean, monotheistic formula of divine protection:

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever stops at a camp or destination and says: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,' nothing will harm him at all until he leaves that camp."

3. Verses 8–10: The Lockdown of the Sky

"And we have sought to reach heaven but found it filled with stern guards and burning flames. And we used to sit there in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a burning flame waiting for him in ambush." (Quran 72:8-9)

The Divine Interception of Information

Prior to the birth of the Prophet ﷺ, the Jinn used to fly up to the lower edges of the atmosphere to eavesdrop on the angels conversing about upcoming earthly events (such as impending deaths, births, or political shifts). They would then fly down and mix one truth with a hundred lies to sell to human fortune-tellers.

The Sunnah notes that the exact moment the Quran began descending, a massive celestial blockade was enacted. The skies were locked down with firing meteors to protect the integrity of the incoming text.

The Prophet ﷺ explained this phenomenon to his companions when a shooting star lit up the night sky: "These stars are not shot because of the death or birth of anyone. Rather, when our Lord decrees a matter, the angels of the Throne glorify Him... until the news reaches the angels of the lowest heaven. The Jinn then steal a hearing, and what they catch they drop down to their allies (the fortune-tellers). But they are pelted with these flames. What they pass down before being hit is true, but they mix it with fabrications."

4. Verses 11–13: The Diverse Theological Camps of the Jinn

"And among us are the righteous, and among us are others than that; we were of different factions (Tara'iqa Qidada)... And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it." (Quran 72:11-13)

Denominational Splinters in Unseen Realms

The Jinn admit in verse 11 that they are not a monolith of evil; they possess free will exactly like humans. They have distinct ideological factions (Tara'iqa Qidada). The Sunnah verifies that just like human societies, the Jinn world contains practicing Muslims, Christians, Jews, atheists, righteous individuals, and dangerous criminals.

Following their initial conversion at Nakhlah, the Prophet ﷺ later held official, scheduled nighttime summits with them to teach them their religious laws.

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (ra) narrated: "On the night of the Jinn summit, the Prophet ﷺ went missing from our camp in the desert. We searched everywhere and feared he had been assassinated. We spent the worst night any people could endure. At dawn, he suddenly appeared coming from the direction of the Cave of Hira.

We cried, 'O Messenger of Allah, we missed you!' He replied, 'A caller from the Jinn came to me, so I went with him and recited the Quran to them.' He then took us and showed us the physical traces of their camp and the embers of their fires."
