Page 478 of the Quran covers Surah Fussilat (Chapter 41), Verses 12 through 20. This specific page transitions dynamically from the final phase of cosmic creation into terrifying historical warnings about the ancient tribes of 'Aad and Thamud, culminating in a chilling depiction of the Day of Judgment where human anatomy revolts against its owner.
Classical works of exegesis (Tafsir), including Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir al-Tabari, connect this page directly to several critical, highly detailed Hadiths found within the canonical text collections (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).
“And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars] for decoration and as a protection. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.”
The Quran explains that the stars in the lowest heaven function both as visual beauty and as a protective barrier (Hifzan) against rebellious devils (Shayatin) trying to eavesdrop on divine decrees.
The Prophetic Explanation:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ expanded on the mechanics of this protection in a famous narration detailing how devils stack on top of one another to steal information from the heavens: “...The stealthy listener hears a word and transmits it to the one below him... until it reaches the tongue of the magician or soothsayer. Sometimes a meteor (shooting star) strikes him before he can transmit it, and sometimes he transmits it before he is struck.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 4800).
The Statement of Qatadah:
The great Successor Qatadah, whose explanations are recorded directly in Sahih al-Bukhari, stated regarding this concept: "Allah created these stars for three purposes: to adorn the heavens, to stone the devils, and as signposts by which travelers guide themselves." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Cosmic Creation, Chapter 3).
“But if they turn away, then say, 'I have warned you of a destructive screaming wind like the destructive screaming wind of 'Aad and Thamud.' ... So We sent upon them a furious wind during days of misfortune...”
As highlighted on the previous page, when the Prophet ﷺ recited verse 13 to the Quraysh elite negotiator, Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, Utbah was so gripped by the terrifying historical warning that he physically leaped forward and placed his hand over the Prophet's mouth, begging him to stop for the sake of their family ties (Musnad Abd bin Humayd, Hadith 1485).
The specific nature of the catastrophic wind (Rihan Sarsaran) sent to obliterate the tribe of 'Aad heavily influenced the daily sunnah and behavior of the Prophet ﷺ:
The Prophetic Anxiety Regarding Dark Clouds:
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that whenever the sky darkened with wind or clouds, anxiety would show plainly on the Prophet's face. He would walk back and forth restlessly. When she asked him why, he explicitly cited the warnings in the Quran regarding the fate of past nations: "O 'Aisha! What guarantee do I have that there is no punishment in it? A past nation was punished with the wind. When they saw the cloud approaching, they happily said, 'This is a cloud bringing us rain!' [but it brought their doom]." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 4829; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 899).
The Dynamics of the Storm:
The Prophet ﷺ also distinguished the types of wind spiritually, stating: "I have been assisted by the Eastern wind (As-Saba), while the people of 'Aad were destroyed by the destructive Western wind (Ad-Dabur)." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1035; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 900).
“And [warn of] the Day when the enemies of Allah will be gathered to the Fire and they will be driven in rows. Until, when they reach it, their hearing, their eyes, and their skins will bear witness against them as to what they used to do.”
One of the most profound psychological and physical events detailed on Page 478 is the loss of personal bodily autonomy on the Day of Resurrection. When a denier argues their innocence, God seals their tongue and forces their own senses and tissues to speak out.
The Laughter of the Prophet ﷺ:
Anas ibn Malik narrated: "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he smiled so broadly his molars showed, then he asked, 'Do you know why I am laughing?' We said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'From the conversation a servant will have with his Lord! He will say: "O my Lord! Did You not guarantee me protection against injustice?" Allah will say: "Yes." The servant will say: "Then I do not accept any witness against myself except from my own body!"'
The Prophet ﷺ continued: “Allah will say, 'Today, your own self is sufficient as a reckoner against you, and the noble scribes as witnesses.' Then his mouth will be sealed, and his limbs will be commanded: 'Speak!' His limbs will then articulate all of his hidden deeds. Then his mouth will be unsealed, and he will turn to his own limbs in anger, shouting: 'Away with you! Destruction be upon you! It was for your defense that I was arguing!'” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2969).
