Page 472 of the Quran covers Surah Ghafir (40), verses 41 through 49. In this powerful section, the Believing Man of Pharaoh’s family delivers his final, emotional plea to his people, openly declaring his reliance on Allah. The page then transitions from his story to the historical reality of Pharaoh’s destruction, providing an explicit look into the intermediate state of the afterlife (Barzakh) and the vivid dialogue between the residents and keepers of Hellfire.
The Sunnah and canonical Hadith literature provide profound contextual depth to these specific verses.
"And you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Seeing of [His] servants."
The statement "I entrust my affair to Allah" (Wa ufawwidu amri ila Allah) is one of the ultimate declarations of reliance (Tawakkul) in the Quran. The Prophet ﷺ codified this state of mind into the daily spiritual routine of a Muslim.
The Prophet ﷺ instructed the believers to use almost identical terminology every single night before closing their eyes, teaching that true peace comes from completely relinquishing control to Allah.
Hadith Context: Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"When you go to bed, perform ablution as for prayer, lie on your right side, and say: 'O Allah... I surrender myself to You, and I entrust my affair to You (wa fawwadtu amri ilayk), and I turn my face towards You... out of desire and fear of You. There is no place of protection or safety from You except with You...'"
The Prophet ﷺ added: "If you should die during the night, you will die upon the natural true faith (Fitrah)."

"The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], 'Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment.'"
This specific verse is widely cited by classical scholars (such as Ibn Kathir) as the primary textual proof for the torment of the grave/intermediate realm (Adhab al-Qabr / Barzakh). It establishes two distinct phases of punishment: a continuous exposure to the Fire before Judgment Day ("morning and evening"), and a much harsher physical entry after it ("the Hour appears").
The Prophet ﷺ explicitly confirmed this exact mechanics of the grave state, mirroring the terminology used in verse 46.
Hadith Context: Abdullah ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"When any one of you dies, his destination is shown to him morning and evening. If he is one of the people of Paradise, he is shown the place of the people of Paradise; and if he is one of the people of Hellfire, he is shown the place of the people of Hellfire. And it is said to him: 'This is your place until Allah resurrects you on the Day of Resurrection.'"
Citation: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 23 (Book of Funerals), Hadith 1379; Sahih Muslim, Book 53, Hadith 2866.
Because of the weight of this reality, the Prophet ﷺ structurally embedded a prayer seeking rescue from this specific "morning and evening" exposure into the end of every mandatory prayer.
Hadith Context: Aisha reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to make this supplication in his prayer:
"O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave, I seek refuge with You from the trial of the Antichrist (Dajjal), and I seek refuge with You from the trials of life and death..."
Citation: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 10 (Call to Prayer), Hadith 832.
And [mention] when they will argue in the Fire, and the weak will say to those who had been arrogant, "Indeed, we were your followers, so can you avail us against a share of the Fire?"... And those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, "Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment."
These verses detail a desperate, psychological break within Hell, where followers turn on their former leaders, and both parties eventually beg the angels of Hell (Khazanah) to ask Allah for just one single day of relief.
The Sunnah details the ultimate finality of this moment. When the denizens of the Fire call out to the keepers of Hell to make du'a for them, it is because they have realized that their own direct supplications are no longer accepted.
Hadith Context: The Prophet ﷺ described the stages of grief and pleading that the people of Hell go through. After calling out to Allah directly and receiving a final decree of silence, they turn to the angels:
"They will call out to the keepers of Hell [as mentioned in Ghafir:49]... The keepers will ask: 'Did your messengers not come to you with clear proofs?' They will say, 'Yes.' The angels will reply, 'Then supplicate yourselves, but the supplication of the disbelievers is nothing but futile wandering.'"
