Page 438 of the Qur'an comprises Surah Fatir (Chapter 35), verses 31 through 38. This portion of the Surah touches on foundational theological frameworks: the absolute preservation of the previous scriptures within the Qur'an, the division of the Muslim community (Ummah) into three distinct categories regarding their spiritual adherence, the blissful rewards of Paradise, and the ultimate accountability of humanity on the Day of Judgment.
Major classic commentaries (Tafsir), including those by Ibn Kathir, connect these verses to multiple authoritative Hadiths and records of the Prophet’s Companions (Sunnah):
"And that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], of the Book is the truth, confirming what was before it... Then We caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants; and among them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is he who is foremost in good deeds by permission of Allah. That [inheritance] is what is the great bounty." (Surah Fatir 35:31-32)
The Status of the Chosen Inheritance: Scholars note that the Qur'an is an inheritance preserved strictly through those selected by Allah to memorize and practice it (Anas et al., 2024; Rohmah, n.d.). The Prophet ﷺ highlighted the supreme status of these inheritors:
Sahih al-Bukhari (5027): The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."
The Prophet's Exegesis of the "Three Tiers": In an explicit prophetic narration, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ defined exactly who these three groups are and what their ultimate fates will be:
Musnad Ahmad (21774) & Sunan al-Tirmidhi (3247): Abu Darda narrated that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite this verse ("Then We caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen...") and say:
"As for those who are foremost in good deeds, they will enter Paradise without any reckoning. As for those who are moderate, they will be subjected to an easy reckoning (Hisaban Yasira). And as for those who wrong themselves, they will feel distress and grief during the holding period [on the Day of Judgment], but then they will be admitted into Paradise."
The Companion’s Joy Over This Verse: This verse is considered one of the most hopeful in the Qur'an for Muslims.
Athar of Ibn Abbas: The cousin of the Prophet, Abdullah ibn Abbas, famously remarked regarding verse 32: "The foremost in good deeds will enter Paradise without a reckoning; the moderate will enter Paradise by the mercy of Allah; and those who wrong themselves will be saved by the intercession (Shafa'ah) of Muhammad ﷺ."
"Gardens of perpetual residence, which they will enter. They will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their garments therein will be silk. And they will say, 'Praise to Allah, who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative.'" (Surah Fatir 35:33-34)
The Jewels of Ablution and Adornments: The verse mentions being adorned with bracelets of gold. The Sunnah connects this directly to worldly rituals of worship:
Sahih Muslim (250): The Prophet ﷺ said: "The adornments of the believer [in Paradise] will reach as far as his wudu (ablution) water reached."
The Reality of Silk and Gold: While men are forbidden from wearing silk and gold in this life, the Sunnah points to these exact verses as the ultimate fulfillment for those who patiently abstained:
Sahih al-Bukhari (5633): The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not wear silk, for whoever wears it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter."
What is the "Sorrow" Removed? The believers cry out that Allah has removed their Hazan (sorrow/grief).
Hadith on Death: In various narrations compiled by early exegetes, the Prophet ﷺ explained that the ultimate "grief" removed from the human condition is the anxiety of the graves and the terrifying uncertainties of the Day of Judgment. The Prophet ﷺ noted that when a believer steps onto the soil of Paradise, they will say: "Praise be to Allah Who has removed all sorrow from us."
"And those who disbelieve will have the fire of Hell... And they will cry out therein, 'Our Lord, remove us; we will do righteousness - other than what we used to do!' [But Allah will say], 'Did We not grant you life enough for whoever would remember therein to remember, and the warner had come to you?'" (Surah Fatir 35:36-37)
The Age of Ultimate Accountability: Allah asks the wrongdoers, "Did We not grant you life enough..." The Sunnah clearly defines the precise baseline age where human excuses before God are entirely cut off:
Sahih al-Bukhari (6419): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah has left no excuse for a person whose life He prolongs until he reaches sixty years of age." (Scholars of Tafsir use this Hadith universally to explain what "life enough" means in verse 37).
Who is "The Warner"? The verse mentions, "and the warner had come to you."
Athar of the Sahabah: In classic commentary, the Companions and their immediate successors (Tabi'un) explicitly stated that "the warner" (Al-Nadhir) mentioned here refers to two things: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, and the appearance of gray hair on a person’s head, which acts as a biological warner of approaching mortality.
