Page 341 of the standard Uthmani codex contains Surah Al-Hajj (Chapter 22), verses 73 through 78.

This page marks the final section of Surah Al-Hajj, culminating in some of the most memorable and stylistically powerful passages in the entire Quran. It includes the famous parable of the fly, the absolute choice of angels and prophets as messengers, the second prostration (Sajdah) of the Surah, and a beautiful closing mandate defining the spiritual heritage of Muslims.

The Sunnah and Hadith literature offer direct contextual commentary and practical action steps for these closing verses.

1. Hadiths Related to Verse 73: The Parable of the Fly

Verse 73 presents a brilliant, humbling challenge to anyone who directs worship toward created things:

"O mankind, a parable is presented, so listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides Allah will never create a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose. And if the fly should steal anything from them, they could not recover it from him. Weak are the pursuer and the pursued." (Quran 22:73).

Sincerity in Intention and the Danger of Riya' (Showing Off)

While the verse primarily addresses the physical idols made of stone or wood, the Prophet ﷺ continuously invoked the psychological spirit of this verse to warn against hidden polytheism (Shirk al-Khafi)—worshipping the validation of people over Allah.

• The Prophetic Warning: In Sunan Ibn Majah, Shaddad bin Aws wept and explained that he remembered a warning from the Prophet ﷺ: "What I fear most for my Ummah is associating partners with Allah and hidden desires." When asked if the Ummah would really worship idols after him, the Prophet ﷺ clarified: "Yes, but they will not worship the sun, nor the moon, nor a stone, nor an idol. Instead, they will do deeds to show off to people (Riya'), and their hidden desire is a form of that."

• The Connection: Just as page 341 exposes the total helplessness of false idols, the Sunnah exposes that seeking the praise of people is empty, because people are just as weak as the "pursuer and the pursued" and cannot grant anyone salvation or true benefit.

2. Hadiths Related to Verse 77: The Second Prostration of Surah Al-Hajj

Verse 77 commands the believers directly:

"O you who have believed, bow and prostrate and worship your Lord and do good - that you may succeed." (Quran 22:77).

As mentioned previously on page 334, Surah Al-Hajj is entirely unique because it features two individual verses of prostration (Sajdah al-Tilawah). This verse is the second one.

The Standard for Performing the Recitation Prostration

The Sunnah outlines exactly how the Prophet ﷺ and his companions reacted when reciting this exact line of text.

• The Hadith of Ibn Umar: Abdullah ibn Umar narrated: "The Prophet ﷺ would recite a Surah to us that contained a prostration, and he would prostrate, and we would prostrate along with him, to the extent that some of us could not find a place for our foreheads [due to the crowding]."

• The Supplication of Prostration: When making this physical prostration upon reading verse 77, the Sunnah encourages reciting a specific prayer:
  "Sajada wajhi lilladhi khalaqahu, wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu bihawlihi wa quwwatih."
  (My face has prostrated before He who created it and brought forth its hearing and vision by His power and might).

3. Hadiths Related to Verse 78: The Identity of "Muslim"

The Surah concludes with a beautiful, sweeping historical mandate in Verse 78:

"...It is the religion of your father, Abraham. Allah named you 'Muslims' before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation]..." (Quran 22:78).

Sticking to the Divine Labels

The Prophet ﷺ fiercely protected this specific naming convention given by Allah on page 341. He warned his community against dividing themselves into tribalistic, political, or nationalistic factions that supersede the universal bond of brotherhood.

• The Prophetic Command: Al-Harith al-Ash'ari narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I command you with five things that Allah commanded me: Listening, obeying, Jihad, Hijrah (migration), and the Jama'ah (the community). For indeed, whoever separates from the community by a handspan has thrown off the yoke of Islam from his neck, unless he returns."

• The Direct Reference to the Verse: The Prophet ﷺ then explicitly stated: "And call yourselves by the name Allah gave you: The Muslims, the Believers, the Servants of Allah."
