Page 233 of the Quran contains Surah Hud (11), verses 98 through 108. This section covers the final cosmic fate of Firawn (Pharaoh) and his followers, transitions into a general warning about the ruined cities of old, and concludes with a vivid, sobering description of the Day of Judgment—specifically detailing the conditions of the wretched (shaqiyy) and the blessed (sa'eed).

The Prophetic Sunnah directly addresses these verses, detailing the theology of leadership, the mechanics of the Day of Judgment, and how a person's ultimate destiny is sealed.

1. Verse 98: Firawn Leading His People into Hellfire

Verse 98 states: "He will precede his people on the Day of Resurrection and lead them into the Fire; and wretched is the place to which they are led."

The Spiritual Law of Leadership

The Sunnah underscores that a leader who guides others toward sin bears a compounding weight of sin on the Day of Judgment. This verse serves as the ultimate example of that rule. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ formalized this spiritual law:

"He who calls people to right guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow him... and he who calls people to error (misguidance) will have a sin equal to that of those who follow him, without their sins being diminished in the least." — Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2674; Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 4609

Because Firawn was the absolute leader in misguidance during his worldly life, his punishment is to physically march ahead of his followers, guiding them directly into Hell.

2. Verse 103: The Gathering of Mankind

Verse 103 explains that the destruction of historical tyrants is a sign for those who fear the afterlife: "That is a Day for which the people will be collected, and that is a Day [which will be] witnessed."

The Physical State of Mankind When Gathered

The Prophetic traditions provide explicit, literal details regarding how humanity will look and stand when they are "collected" on this witnessed Day.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The people will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised." 'A'ishah said, "O Messenger of Allah! Men and women together, looking at one another?" He said, "The situation will be too severe for anyone to pay attention to that." — Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6527; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2859

The Intensity of the Witnessed Day

The Sunnah further describes the physical climate of this gathering mentioned in Surah Hud. The Prophet ﷺ noted that the sun will be brought close to the creation—within a distance of one mile—and people will submerge in their own sweat based on the gravity of their worldly deeds (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2864).

3. Verses 105–108: The Separation of the Wretched and the Blessed

Verses 105 through 108 describe the ultimate dividing line of humanity: "The Day it comes no soul will speak except by His permission. And among them will be the wretched and the blessed... As for those who were wretched, they will be in the Fire... And as for those who were blessed, they will be in Paradise..."

The Prophetic Commentary on "The Wretched" and "The Blessed"

A highly significant Hadith relates directly to this division. While traveling for a funeral, the Prophet ﷺ sat down, cracked the ground with a stick, and discussed this exact cosmic classification of souls.

Ali ibn Abi Talib narrated: We were in a funeral procession in Baqi al-Gharqad when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat down, and we sat around him. He said, "There is none among you, no created soul, but has his place written for him either in Paradise or in the Fire, and it has been written for him whether he will be a wretched person (shaqiyy) or a blessed person (sa'eed)." A man said, "O Messenger of Allah! Should we not then depend upon what is written for us and leave off working?" He replied, "No, carry on doing good deeds, for everyone will find it easy to do those deeds which will lead him to his destined place. As for those who are from the blessed, they will find it easy to do the deeds of the blessed. As for those who are from the wretched, they will find it easy to do the deeds of the wretched." — Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 4949; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2647

The Sighing and Sobbing in the Fire (Verse 106)

Verse 106 states that the wretched will have "for them therein [violent] exhaling and inhaling (sighing and sobbing)." The Sunnah connects this description to the physical features of Hellfire. The Prophet ﷺ warned that Hell will be brought forth on that Day dragged by 70,000 ropes, with 70,000 angels pulling each rope, roaring with fury (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2842). The agonizing breathing described in verse 106 mirrors the terrifying atmosphere of their destination.
