Page 226 of the Qur'an contains verses 38 through 45 of Surah Hud (Chapter 11). This page captures the incredible climax of the story of Prophet Nuh (Noah): the mocking he faced while building the Ark, the bursting forth of the subterranean waters (Tannur), the boarding of the animals in pairs, the famous prayer formula he uttered as the ship sailed, and the heartbreaking final dialogue between Nuh and his doomed son.

The Hadith and Sunnah provide rich theological commentary, linguistic explanations, and foundational formulas derived from these specific verses.

1. The Sign of the Oven (At-Tannur) and Boarding the Ark (Verses 38–40)

"Until when Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, 'Load upon the ship of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those against whom the word has preceded, and whoever believed.' And none had believed with him, except a few." (Qur'an 11:40)

Understanding the Over-flooding Oven

Verse 40 describes the catastrophic launch of the flood, marked by the sign: "and the oven overflowed" (fāra at-tannūr). In classical Hadith and narrations from the Companions (recorded by Ibn Kathir and At-Tabari), this phrasing is explained literally.

Abdullah ibn Abbas clarified that the Tannur was a literal clay bread-oven on earth. When water miraculously burst forth from the very place where fire usually burns, Nuh knew that the laws of nature had inverted and the divine punishment had officially commenced.

The Small Number of Believers

The verse ends by highlighting the bleak reality of Nuh’s mission: "And none had believed with him, except a few."

To put this "few" into perspective and give comfort to the early Muslims who were also small in number, the Prophet Muhammad explained that Nuh's centuries of effort yielded a tiny group, showing that a prophet's success is measured by loyalty to the truth, not popularity metrics:

The Prophet said: "I saw the prophets on the Night of Journey... and a prophet would pass by with a small group (Raht, fewer than ten people), and another prophet with only one or two men, and another prophet with nobody at all with him..."

2. Nuh’s Prayer: The Sunnah of Boarding a Vehicle (Verse 41)

"And [Noah] said, 'Embark therein; in the name of Allah is its sailing and its anchoring. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.'" (Qur'an 11:41)

The Absolute Necessity of Bismillah

When Nuh and the believers stepped onto the wooden planks of the Ark as the world dissolved around them, he initiated the voyage by saying: "Bismillahi majrayhā wa mursāhā" (In the name of Allah is its sailing and its anchoring).

The Prophet Muhammad transformed this prophetic action into a perpetual daily Sunnah for all Muslims. He taught that any major action—especially traveling or boarding a vehicle—is spiritually broken and stripped of divine blessing (Barakah) if it does not begin by invoking the name of Allah:

The Messenger of Allah said: "Every important matter that does not start with the remembrance of Allah is severed [from blessings]."

The Derivative Sunnah for Travel

Following Nuh's example on this page, the Prophet established a beautiful protocol whenever he placed his foot into the stirrup of his mount or boarded a transport vessel. He would explicitly echo the sentiment of Surah Hud 11:41:

Whenever the Prophet mounted his camel to go out on a journey, he would say "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah), then say "Alhamdulillah" (Praise be to Allah) three times, and then recite: "Glory to Him who has subjected this to us..."

3. The Tragedy of Nuh's Son & Bloodlines vs. Faith (Verses 42–45)

"And it sailed with them through waves like mountains, and Noah called to his son who was apart, 'O my son, embark with us and be not with the disbelievers.' [The son] said, 'I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water.' [Noah] said, 'There is no protector today from the decree of Allah, except for whom He gives mercy.' And the waves came between them, so he was among the drowned." (Qur'an 11:42-43)

The Reality of "Waves Like Mountains"

Verse 42 features the evocative visual description: "waves like mountains." The Prophet Muhammad and his companions referenced this scale to understand the magnitude of global cataclysms. The Sunnah emphasizes that when divine anger manifests due to widespread corruption, physical geography offers no protection, rendering the son's logic ("I will take refuge on a mountain") completely useless.

Spiritual Alliance Overrides Biological Bloodlines

Nuh’s final plea to his son, followed by his prayer in verse 45 ("My Lord, indeed my son is of my family..."), sets up a massive legal and theological rule in Islam.

The Sunnah explicitly confirms that biological lineage means absolutely nothing if there is no shared faith. A person cannot coast into salvation or escape worldly and otherworldly consequences based on who their parents are. The Prophet Muhammad directly echoed this reality to his own closest family members to ensure they never fell into the trap of Nuh's son:

The Messenger of Allah stood up when the verse "And warn your closest kindred" was revealed, and he called out publicly: "O company of Quraish! Buy yourselves from Allah, for I cannot avail you anything against Allah. O Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (the Prophet's uncle)! I cannot avail you anything against Allah. O Safiyyah (the Prophet's aunt)! I cannot avail you anything against Allah. O Fatima daughter of Muhammad! Ask me whatever you want from my personal wealth, but I cannot avail you anything at all against Allah."
