Surah Al-Fatihah is the first chapter of the Quran. Its name literally means "The Opening" or "The Key," as it serves as the preface to the entire holy book. It consists of seven verses and is considered the cornerstone of the Quran, summarizing the relationship between Allah and His creation, His authority, and humanity's dependence on Him for guidance. It is central to Islamic prayer (Salah), being recited 17 times a day in obligatory prayers.
When and Where it was Revealed:
The most widely accepted view among scholars is that Surah Al-Fatihah was revealed in Mecca. It is considered one of the very earliest revelations to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), with some traditions even stating it was the first complete Surah revealed.
While the majority of scholars agree on its Meccan origin, some views suggest it was revealed in Medina, or even twice (once in Mecca and again in Medina). However, the evidence, particularly from other Meccan Surahs like Al-Hijr (15:87) which refers to "the seven oft-repeated verses" (understood to be Al-Fatihah), strongly supports its revelation in Mecca.
