ADVICE
Please have lots patience and diligence in studying the Quran while using these basic and elementary materials. One needs to have the dedication, passion and love for Allah, subhanna wa ta'ala, and his prophet, Muhammad, sallalahu alayhi wa salam. There are no easy shortcuts in learning Islam and the Quran. It would take hard dedicated work. We can only help and guide one another. Learning Islam and the Quran is the loftiest, most difficult and most challenging, among all the fields of study in the entire world. At the same time it is the most exciting, fulfilling and most rewarding learning experience as it draws the student closer to Allah, s.w.t.
The Quran is the verbatim speech (kalam) of Allah, subhanna wa ta'ala, as it was reavealed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad, sallalahu alayhi wa salam. This was passed on to us through mutawatir (mass) transmission. The Quran mushaf, contains the records of the speech of Allah. By itself, it has approximately 77,430 to 77,915 words, 6,236 to 6,349 ayats (verses), 114 chapters inside a book of 604 pages.
If I may share my personal experience on this learning journey, I reverted back to Islam in Septermber of 2012, late in life, in my 50's. As university researcher and full pledged professor of business management and technology at a state university, I was given the opportunity to present a technological and academic research paper at an international conference at the KLCC in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia hosted by Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP). This was in June of 2012. One of my original intentions was to try to convince some Muslim and non-Muslim professors and academics i was going to meet, about the superiority of Christianity over Islam. My initial Islamic research and study was motivated by the desire to prove, intellectually and logically, that Islam is wrong and inferior to Christianity. I wanted to convert Muslims and unbelievers to Christianity. However, by the mercy and grace of Allah, s.w.t., it was I who received guidance into the faith which I initially wanted to fight against. Alhamdullilah.
Within 2 years of becoming a Muslim, in 2012 - 2014, I embarked on a deeper study of Islam, and the Quran, in particular. I started with a page by page, word by word, personal study beginning with the 1st page Surah Al-Fatihah. After almost 12 years, in the afternoon of June 26, 2025 at 4:36 pm, I reached the last word of Surah An-Nas. In my assessment, it is as if, I have simply completed only some of the basics, and there are more things to learn, like full memorization (many years ago, I paused memorization of the Quran at page 10 in Surah Al-Baqarah), proper tajweed, Arabic grammar, Haddith sciences, Islamic jurisprudence, etc. I realized that learning Islam and the Quran will be for my entire lifetimehere in this dunya. By analogy, what can be learned is but a small droplet of water in a fingertip dipped into an ocean filled with the eternal knowledge and wisdom of Allah, s.w.t. One tiny water droplet is only what the human intellect has the capacity to absorb and comprehend, in his entire lifetime. Subhan Allah.
BEST OF ALL , while doing continuous diligent personal study, LEARN directly and personally, as a student of Islamic knowledge, from our imams, leaders, scholars and teachers which Allah has provided to us. Live among and pray with Muslims in the communities and learn from one another.
May Allah, s.w.t., have mercy and guide us in our learning.
Allahu Akbar.
